Burns at home: what to do and what to avoid

Burns are among the most common injuries at home, especially in the kitchen and among children. Acting correctly in the first minutes greatly reduces the damage.

Do
Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes. Remove rings and tight clothing before swelling starts. Cover with a clean, non-stick dressing.
Avoid
Ice directly on the skin, toothpaste, butter, or home remedies. Don't pop blisters or pull off clothing stuck to the skin.

Get medical care right away if the burn is large; on the face, hands, joints, or genitals; chemical or electrical; or if the person is a child or elderly.
