The AED: don't be afraid to use it
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is designed to be used by anyone, even without medical experience. It analyzes the heart rhythm by itself and only delivers a shock when one is needed.
- Turn the device on and follow the voice prompts.
- Expose the chest and dry it if it's wet.
- Attach the pads as shown in the picture on each pad.
- Stand clear during analysis and make sure no one is touching the person.
- Press the shock button if prompted, then resume chest compressions immediately.
We recommend every facility keeps an AED in a clearly marked spot and trains enough staff to use it.
