Adult CPR, step by step

If you see an adult collapse suddenly and not respond, here are the short steps based on accredited resuscitation guidelines:

  1. Make sure the scene is safe for you and the victim.
  2. Check responsiveness: tap their shoulders and shout.
  3. Call for help: phone EMS and ask someone to bring an AED.
  4. Check breathing for no more than 10 seconds. If they aren't breathing, or only gasping, start right away.
  5. Push hard on the center of the chest, 5–6 cm deep, at 100–120 compressions per minute, allowing full chest recoil.
  6. If you're trained, give 2 breaths after every 30 compressions. If not, continue with compressions only.
  7. Use the AED as soon as it arrives and follow its voice prompts.

Don't stop until the medical team takes over or the person starts moving and breathing normally.
